Robert Briggs is winner of Journal Article of the Year (General Category) in the 2014 Humanities Research and Creative Production Awards, for:
- Briggs, Robert. “The Future of Prediction: Speculating on William Gibson’s Meta-Science-Fiction”. Textual Practice 27.4 (2013): 671-693, doi:10.1080/0950236X.2012.738702
Robert’s article was assessed as: “an elegantly-written and impressive examination of the function of prediction in science fiction, explored through author William Gibson’s ‘Bridge’ novels”. A reviewer described Briggs’ manuscript as “exceptionally strong and engaging reading”, going on to say that it will be a “major resource” in Gibson studies, science fiction and utopian studies. The article draws on the work of significant theorists in prediction, cyberpunk, utopian studies and metafiction, and its seemingly effortless style leads the reader on a journey through the argument and understandings of ‘the future’ and prediction in science fiction.Photo: Professor Graeme Wright, DVC Research and Development, presenting the Award to Robert Briggs, on 2 September 2014.
